The History of Burrowa Welsh Pony & Cob Stud Stallions

In 1987 I joined the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Australia and started looking for some Welsh Cobs to start  Burrowa Welsh Pony and Cob Stud at “Tipperary”, a property near Walwa in the beautiful Upper Murray district of Victoria.

In 1990 Vi Meyers lent me her well known Sec D stallion Gwibedog Sportsman (imp) who had been shown extensively. He arrived with the mare Trefaes Cymraes (imp).  Gwibedog  Sportsman  was the resident stallion until he broke his leg in a paddock accident in 1998 and had to be put down.

Burrowa Sportsman’s Last out of Chapel House Gwenhwyfar was born in 1998 shortly after Sportsman was put down. Being a cream colt of quality he was able to “save the day”.

Burrowa Sportsman’s Last has been shown extensively and very successfully under saddle for many years in open and Welsh Breed shows.“Sportie” has been a great ambassador for the Welsh Cob, competing in ridden, working hunter, dressage, Welsh hunter and showjumping. Always a quiet stallion at shows and in company he promotes good temperament.

In 2004 I purchased the yearling  Welsh Cob colt Cwmkaren Bigley Express from Carole Riley of Queensland. He produced good fillies to retain and was then sold on to Barringa Stud Vic.

In 2009 I was invited to go to the UK by Linda Hills of Hillswood Stud and purchased Abergavenny Achilles from  Abergavenny Stud in Wales.

Achilles has been shown in hand very successfully including Supreme Champion Welsh Cob at the 2012 VAW.

The Welsh Cob mare Burrowa Annwyn by Sportie was exported to the Westfield Stud in NZ. The Welsh Cob stallion  Burrowa Trafaelwr by Sportie  was also exported to  NZ and in 2012 the Welsh Cob filly Burrowa Adelpha, by Abergavenny Achilles(imp.) was purchased by Sandra Evers of the Willowview Stud NZ.

In 2016 abergavenny Achilles (imp.UK) was sold to Jayde and Daniel Whitehead of Jindera NSW.  They have also purchased some of our mares for him and recently a Section D filly by Burrowa Sportsman’s Last shown with great success already. They have been showing Achilles progeny very successfully in hand at major shows and intend to continue showing in hand, harness and future saddle classes.
